After the sintering, very small particle sizes (< 50 nm) were obtained for all samples (Table 5). For p-TCP, the smallest particle size is obtained for sample-VI in (0210) plane (Table 5). As the Mg content increased, the particle sizes for (002) and (300) planes were decreased in groups 1 and 2. 5 mole% in both F doped and undoped samples. In group 2, particle sizes along the (300) plane were increased with the addition of F. ion. 5 mole%) doped F-,respectively. No pTCP formation is observed in 1 mole% Mg doped sample I1 and V.

It has been demonstrated that microporosity (diameter < 10 pm) allows body fluid circulation whereas macroporosity (diameter 100 pm) provides a scaffold for bone-cell colonization. It was reported that BCP ceramic with an average pore size diameter ,of 565 pm (compared to those with average pore size diameter of 300 pm) and 40% macroporosity (compared to 50% macroporosity) had greater bone ingrowth [42]. >; Biological properties: The interest of BCP concept is the equilibrium of the resorption and the bone ingrowth at the expense of the bioceramics.

The cells were typically found to be attached to a single syntheti'c fiber (Figure 3b). On higher magnification (Figure 3c), thin processes are seen encircling the eCA fiber. These appear to be portions of the cell membrane that form an anchor around the fiber. It cannot be determined if the cell incorporates within the fiber itself. In contrast, the osteoblasts seeded on the eCA-nHA composite scaffolds attached themselves to several fibers that formed an interconnecting network. Only a portion of the cells display a spherical shape.
